Fundamentals of Technical Communication, Session 7

Session 7, The Life of a Technical Communicator, is the last session of the Spring 2006 Fundamentals of Technical Communication course offered by Northen Illinois University in affiliation with the STC Institute for Professional Development. A half day session preceding the presentation of student projects, its discussed the working environment, practices and trends in the technical communication profession. Agenda items included:

• Non-writing tasks
• Trends
• Employment vs. Independent

The STC Institute for Professional Development (Web Link) is a partnership between the Chicago Chapter of the STC (Society for Technical Communication) and Northern Illinois University that provides college-credit courses for traditional students and working professionals who want to develop or enhance their knowledge and skills in technical communication.

Authoring within a Content Management System

Developed and delivered a 1-credit course entitled, Authoring Within a Content Management System. The class introduced the concept of authors as contributors to a content repository, as opposed to traditional creators of documents. Instruction and exercises were provided for writing structured content, publishing in multiple media, and constructing dynamic content.
